The rudder section of the Pasha Bulker, lying off Nobbys Beach at Newcastle since the successful refloat of the vessel, was retrieved from the ocean today.
CEO of Newcastle Port Corporation, Gary Webb, said the rudder section which broke away from the ship during the successful refloat operation in early July was retrieved during favourable sea conditions.
A commercial contractor working for the ships owner, Fukujin Kisen Co. Ltd., successfully retrieved the rudder section early this morning, said Mr Webb.

Crowds lined the Newcastle and Stockton foreshore at lunchtime today, clapping and cheering as the crippled bulk coal carrier Pasha Bulker limped into port.
As helicopters flew overhead, monitoring the continuation of the Pasha's salvage, onlookers witnessed tugs including the Woona and the Mayfield performed rarely-seen zigzagging manoeuvres to drag the ship safely into port.
New South Wales Ports Minister Joe Tripodi said the State's police and maritime escorted the vessel "with oil pollution booms and other equipment on stand by".

NEWCASTLE may have seen the stern of the Pasha Bulker, but questions remain about how its grounding occurred and who will pay the multi-million dollar salvage bill.

The cost of the salvage operation, which included three attempts during evening high tides since last Thursday, has been estimated at about $5 million.

The 40,000 tonne coal carrier Pasha Bulker may be headed to Queensland for repairs after it was dragged off Newcastle's Nobbys Beach and into deep water last night.
The ship is at anchor 11 nautical miles from the shore where it had been stuck since June 8, and divers were this morning inspecting its damaged hull.
"There has been talk about it being towed to Brisbane," Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate told Sky News early today.
"But I don't think they will be towing it too far without having a good look underneath it first."
Mr Tate said the ship could also be taken into the calmer waters of Newcastle Harbour to aid in the inspection.

Author: CLEMENTIA CUNEO Source: THE DAILY TELEGRAPHTHREE weeks after it beached in savage storms, and having already cost $4.2 million, the stricken carrier Pasha Bulker is just five metres closer to returning to sea.
Industry sources estimate it is costing more than $200,000 for each day it stays stranded, which means those five metres have cost the Pasha Bulker's Japanese owners Fukujin Kisen, or at least its insurance company, $4.2m - or $840,000 a metre.
