Newcastle Airport officially opens its $10 million apron (tarmac) expansion

Following six months of construction work, Newcastle Airport’s $10 million apron expansion will be officially opened by The Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon, Federal Member for Hunter and Minister for Defence on Monday 7 April.

Local MPs and dignitaries, senior RAAF personnel, and key local business people will also be in attendance for this significant milestone in Newcastle Airport’s history.

SIXTH CRUISE SHIP TO VISIT

The sixth cruise ship of the season will visit Newcastle on Saturday 8 March when the Albatros makes her inaugural visit.

The ship, carrying over 600 passengers, will enter Newcastle Harbour at 8am and leave for Sydney at approximately 12 noon. The 205 metre long ship will berth at Throsby Wharf, now available again for cruise ship visits after the recent demolition of the old shed.

A study conducted by the aviation safety regulator, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in October 2007 determined that safety procedures undertaken at Newcastle Airport, including those for traffic control at weekends, meet safety standards.  Newcastle Airport participated in this study together with airline operators and pilots.

Claims made by Mr Dick Smith in today’s Newcastle Herald that that the Airport was not safe on the weekend as the traffic control tower at RAAF Base, Williamtown was not manned, are unfounded. 

“Mr Smith may not be aware of the full circumstances surrounding the operations of Newcastle Airport RAAF Base, Williamtown. 

“Newcastle Airport works very closely with all government departments and regulators relating to aviation safety.

CRUISE HUNTER MOVES TO CORPORATION

Management of the highly successful regional enterprise, Cruise Hunter, has relocated to Newcastle Port Corporation to allow further development of the niche market. 

Member for Newcastle, Jodi McKay, said the re-location from Newcastle City Council would result in improved synergy between port operations and the marketing of Newcastle as a cruise and naval destination.

This is great news for Newcastle the relocation is timed to coincide with the start of the 2007-08 summer cruise season and well see six cruise ships visiting Newcastle by March next year, Ms McKay said.

WATERSIDE RESTRICTED ZONE

A waterside restricted zone will be in force tomorrow (Tuesday, 27 November 2007) for the inaugural visit of the cruise liner, Pacific Star.

The Pacific Star will sail into Newcastle about 6am tomorrow to berth at Throsby No.1 Wharf before departing at 7pm.

The vessel is bringing nearly 1200 passengers for leisure and recreational activities in the city and the Hunter Valley.

The Pacific Star cruise ship will visit Newcastle and the Hunter on Tuesday 27 November to kick-start what promise to be the busiest cruise season ever for Cruise Hunter.

The cruise season from November 2007 to March 2008 will see a total of six cruise ship visits to Newcastle attracting a record number of 12,000 visitors to the Hunter Region injecting an estimated $2-3 million dollars into the local economy.
